英文摘要 | The Bible Society Library of the University of Cambridge possesses a manuscript of an old Chinese Bible in the eighteenth century, including a harmony of the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, the Pauline letter, and the first chapter of Hebrews, which is an early exemplar of the translation made by Jean Basset, a French Catholic missionary. Jean Basset was a missionary of Missions Étrangères de Paris to China in the late seventeenth century. In 1689, he arrived in Canton. From 1702 he worked in Szechwan, and planned to translate the New Testament in Chinese, but died in Canton having completed his translation only as far as the first chapter of Hebrews. The account of Fr. Basset's work appears in the journal of André Ly, who was a Chinese Catholic priest working in Szechwan. From Ly's account we know that Basset had translated the New Testament into the Chinese language, from Matthew through to the first chapter of Hebrews. The section of Acts to Hebrews presumably was Basset's work, but since no autograph copies of the Gospels are known, there is no evidence as to who compiled the harmony of the Gospels. It has been suggested that André Ly and another Chinese assistant, Jean Su, also may have prepared the Harmony. But since no evidence exists, it may be that Basset's Gospels translation actually was a translation of a Gospel harmony.Although we have several transcripts of Basset's version in existence, its author's name was unknown till the early twentieth century. The oldest one was the copy in the Bible Society Library of University of Cambridge, but the one first discovered was the British Library Sloane Ms #3599 which has the same text as the manuscript in the Bible Society Library. Some of the later transcripts were copies of the Sloane Ms. In 1737, the Sloane Ms was discovered by John Hodgson of the English East India Company in Canton, and he had a copy made, which he took to England in the following year. Hodgson presented it to Sir Hans Sloan who, in turn, presented it to the British Museum Robert Morrison, later the translator of the complete Bible into High Wenli Chinese, copied this transcript from the British Museum. He brought this copy with him when he went to China, and was strongly influenced by this translation. Joshua Marshman of Serampore was also indebted to this translation. However, the direct indebtedness of Protestant Bible translation to Catholic efforts ceased after their translations.By focusing on the manuscript in the Bible Society Library, this article aims to introduce the historical background and content of this early Chinese Bible manuscript. We will also survey its influence on the early Protestant Chinese Bible translation. |
