英文摘要 | The purpose of this study was to quantitatively and qualitatively explore the difference between high-achieving and low-achieving persuasive writers’ strategy uses in Taiwan. Fifty five technological college students majoring in English participated in this study. A questionnaire designed by the current study was used to elicit their learning strategy uses. Besides, semi-structured interviews as well as text analyses were conducted. Results indicated that the frequency of learning strategies is not an appropriate indicator to differentiate high-achieving from low-achieving writers since there was an overlap between high-achieving and low-achieving writers’ strategy uses. In addition, the analysis of canonical correlation revealed that even though high-achieving writers frequently used strategies, the beneficial effects just showed in their linguistic competence. Although some strategies were frequently used by high-achieving and low-achieving writers, high-achieving ones’ strategy uses were still qualitatively better than low-achieving ones’. Furthermore, effective strategy users generally performed better in persuasive writings than ineffective ones. It is concluded that students should realize how effectively instead of how frequently strategies should be used. Persuasive writing instruction integrated with sophisticated strategy training should be called for. |
