英文摘要 | This paper aims to enact a productive dialogue between Edmund Spenser and Walter Benjamin. Britomart’s reading of Busirane’s art in Book III of The Faerie Queene is taken up as the main textual focus of analysis. I first explore the dialectic between stasis and movement in order to clarify Spenser’s conception of allegorical interpretation. The allegorical impediment suspends the movement of signification and returns Britomart, the reader, to the original or the literal. Through this return, Britomart initiates the process of contemplation and relativizes Busirane’s authoritative interpretation. The return to the literality of language is further explicated through the medieval model of allegorical levels and Benjamin’s theory of translation and origin. I engage with Derridean suspension of reality and valorization of interiority in order to establish that the concept of textual exteriority preserves the possibility of ethical acts which are precluded or evaded in deconstructionism. Lastly, I deal with the workings of repetition and reconciliation in Britomart’s allegorical reading to argue for the necessity of othering otherness. I first demonstrate that the allegorical “already-and-not-yet” temporality can liberate the present from the “no-longer-and-not-yet” disembodied temporality of Derridean hauntology so that secular or linguistic contingency might become a mediatory embodiment of the impossible. In addition, I turn the Derridean interiority reflexively back upon itself in order for language to be truly uncertain and for reality to be accessible. My ultimate aim is to resuscitate the mimetic “realistic” function of language and to materialize the ethical effectuality of cultural practices. |
