英文摘要 | Carcass length is the length straight from the fore edge of the first rib to the fore tip of the public bone, which is recognized as an economically important trait for genetic improvement of pigs. The number of rib pairs might influence the dorsal lenght of a pig. Association between carcass length and pair of ribs in hogs was determined in the study. In Exp. 1, data of 206 head of dissected pigs including breeds of Landrace, Yorkshire, Duroc, Berkshire, Taoyuan, Meishan, Mitsae and Lanyu were analyzed. Results indicated that most hogs with a maximal number of rib pairs 17,16,16,15,14,14,14 and 14, for the above breeds accordingly. Five of the breeds had variation, a minimal number of 15,14,15,14 and 13 pairs of ribs were also observed in Landrace, Yorkshire, Ducroc, Berkshire and Lanyu pigs, respectively. In Exp. 2, a total of 1572 hogs with carcass length varying from 81 to 86 cm was used to measure the associated pair of ribs in each individual hog. Frequencies of hogs having 14,15,16 or 17 pairs of ribs to the total number of animals used in the study were 0.83, 36.07,61.70 and 1.40%, respectively. There were 1.84% of hogs with 14 pairs of ribs in the 81 cm of carcass length group, but hogs with 14 pairs of ribs was not found in the 86 cm carcass length group. Also, there was 3.18% of hogs had 17 pairs of ribs in the 86 cm carcass length group which was significantly higher as compared to the 0.74% of hogs in the 81 cm carcass length group. The results indicated that the frequency of hogs with 16 or 17 pairs of ribs increased as carcass length were increased. In Exp. 3, without pre-selecting on carcass length, a total of 3234 hogs was measured randomly and pair of ribs of each carcass was recorded. Frequencies of hogs with 14,15,16 or 17 pairs of ribs to the total number of hogs measured were 5.9,44.2,48.4 and 1.5%, respectively. Furthermore, the corresponding means of carcass length with the associated standard errors were 82.3 ± 0.2, 83.2 ± 0.1, 84.2 ± 0.1 and 85.1 ± 0.4 cm, respectively. Significant test showed that carcass length of hogs increased as the number of rib pairs increased (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference in mean carcass weights of hogs with various pairs of ribs. The corresponding mean carcass weights with the associated standard errors were 89.7 ± 0.5, 89.8 ± 0.2,89.7 ± 0.2 and 90.0 ± 1.1 kg, for hogs with 14,15,16 and 17 pairs of ribs, respectively. When carcasses with 81 to 86 cm carcass legth only were used for analysis, they represented 74.5% of sampled hogs (2410/3234), the percentages of hogs with carcass length from 81 to 86 cm in the group with a numerary pair of ribs were calculated. Percentage of carcasses with 81 cm long were 24.1% in group of 14 pair of ribs but only 2.9% in group of 17 pair of ribs. In conclusion, we found a breed difference in number of rib pairs existed. Carcass length decreased in relation to a decrease in the number of rib pairs in hogs. |
