| 英文摘要 | Protestant missionaries had a clear objective of evangelism in mind while embarking on the enterprise of translating Christian literature in nineteenth-century China. This paper adopts a descriptive-explanatory approach to examine critically William Muirhead's (1822 - 1900) Chinese translations of a leading Christian tract which aimed to convert the Confucian scholars in late Qing China: John Angell James's (1785-1859) The Anxious Inquirer after Salvation Directed and Encouraged. The purpose of this case study is two-fold: to scrutinize the ways in which missionary translators negotiate the gaps between cultural and religious ideologies, specifically Christianity and Confucianism, and to shed light on the Chinese reception of translated Christian tracts. |
