英文摘要 | As online corpuses are becoming available, English Language Teaching (ELT) is now facing many challenges in the coming new era. Among these challenges, the acquisition of collocations has remained a central concern. Whether collocations should be taught explicitly or implicitly has been a tough decision. The collocation-targeted Lexical Syllabus, likewise, has been seriously discussed. It is widely debated whether the Lexical Syllabus can be recognized as "an approach." The author shares his successful experience in implementing this syllabus/approach and describes what a collocation-focused class should look like. This paper uses for illustration a case study in which the author, after a description of the Lexical Syllabus, takes on the teacher-research roles in teaching collocations in a course on ESP for Taiwanese students at a technological university. It first describes the process of this course, the practical activities that incorporate collocations into the teaching of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and the students' progress in their knowledge and use of collocations, as well as the design of this experimental course. Drawing mainly on qualitative research instruments, the author intends to answer the following questions: (1) What are students' attitudes toward the teaching of collocations and the ESP course? (2) How effective are the textbook, the presentation of collocations, and the activity types? (3) How does he, as a teacher, learn from this ESP course? and (4) How is this research related to the future development of ESP course and the direction of EFL education in Taiwan? |
