英文摘要 | This paper discusses everyday routines such as greetings, thanks, and farewells, as performed by American-born Chinese children. The first part of this paper will examine their spontaneous (unprompted) utterances of 'Good/fine' (to the greeting 'How are you?') and 'Thank you' in either Chinese or English. The author's assumption is that if American-born Chinese children's production is high in percentage, it is the positive transfer of a linguistic notion they have acquired in their first language. In addition, this paper also examines children's ability to identify two identify two languages and, as a result, to use them in accordance with different social settings. Thus, along with the elicitation of routines, codeswitching is observed and documented. The final part of the study presents analysis and discussion of the zero spontaneous performance of 'Goodbye', together with other data collected, in an attempt to explain the role of verbal cues in these children's cognition. |
