英文摘要 | What kinds of gender differences exist in cognitive abilities? Are there differential developmental patterns in cognitive abilities between boys and girls? By comparing the standard mean difference (d) based on the most recent WISC-III (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, 3rd edition) standardization data for Taiwan (N=1,100), both the magnitude and the developmental trends of gender differences from age 6 through 16 were examined for a broad range of cognitive abilities. The most important findings were: (1) the magnitude of gender differences in cognitive abilities were not large, and the majority of standard mean differences fall inside the small effect size range from -0.2 to +0.2, with the exceptions of performances in Picture Arrangement, Block Design, Object Assembly, and Coding subtests; (2) boys performed comparatively well in the domains of Perceptual Organization and Arithmetic tasks, while girls tended to show higher abilities on Digit Span and Processing Speed tasks; (3) with a few exceptions, gender differences on the majority of the WISC-III subtests diminished as age increased; and (4) differential developmental trends were found across different task domains. Suggestions for further research were discussed. |
