英文摘要 | Poverty has been determined to be a risk factor for health, behavioral, and developmental problems in children. The purpose of this study was to explore what is important in children from low-income families. A field study design was used. The sample consisted of 16 children, age 8 to 12. The subjects were asked to take photographs of things that are important to them, and then were asked to describe the photographs during group interviews. A constant comparative method of analysis was used to category the themes. The themes identified from this study were “feeling cared for” “being helped,” and “feeling of happiness.” The theme “feeling cared for” encompassed two sub-themes of “giving” and “sharing.” “Feeling cared for giving” reflected the subjects’ relationships with adult persons were associated with giving behaviors. Giving behaviors in low-income children were valued to them. “Feeling cared for sharing” emerged from the subjects’ relationships with child-friends, relatives, families, pets, and stuff toy. Feeling of sharing was built up by participating in, using, or enjoying experiences with others. “Being helped” means when someone helps the subjects solve problems. The persons who helped the subjects included their child-friends, their families, or their teachers. “Feeling of happiness” was emerged from the subjects describing feeling happy. Understanding what is important in poor children can provide information for health care providers to develop programs or interventions in order to increase the children’s strength and bring meaningful experiences to children at risk. |
