英文摘要 | This study investigates the validity and reliability of an English grammar proficiency test, administered to 371 freshman English majors at Providence University. The test is intended to evaluate the effectiveness of grammar instruction for the first semester of the composition curriculum, based on the hypothesis that grammar proficiency is related to students' writing ability. It also serves to screen students for eligibility to continue in the second semester of the course, which concentrates on writing. A detailed classical item analysis was first conducted on the testing scores of the grammar pre-test,composed of 100 multiple choice questions covering ten major grammatical points. Fifty test items, with a range of difficulty levels between 30-84% and a discrimination index above 36%, were selected to form the post-test. A split-half reliability index was calculated. The grammar test was further correlated with the student's scores on the Joint College Entrance Examination (JCEE), listening comprehension, and writing ability to provide evidence for validity. Finally, a comparison was made between the pre-test and post-test scores of 371 students, divided into 14 sections taught by 10 different teachers. A post hoc comparison was conducted based on questionnaires administered to the same group of students to determine if there was any significant difference in students' evaluation of the effectiveness of the course related to different teaching methods. Pedagogical implications are provided. |
