英文摘要 | This research article focuses upon an universal salvation ceremony (pudu) held in the city of Quanzhou, Southeast China in 1896. Data analyzed here mainly include a collection of documents, compiled by ritual organizers themselves, concerning the initiation, organization, ritual processes, and participation of the ceremony. The main concern of this article is local popular approaches to the conquest of social crises (in duced by death and life-killing epidemics) at particular historical moments. The author argues that the universal salvation ceremony in Quanzhou was a cultural response to external challenges of the Chinese native place; its main aim was to transcend a historical reality through ritual illusion. The ceremony was also used to mobilize local territorial communities into an integral whole in order to regenerate social order. Such a ceremony resembled "revitalization movements" studied by a generation of anthropologists among tribal and third world peoples. It conveyed a message of nativist integrity and cultural identification, and thus to a certain degree could be described as a proto-nationalist movement. Drawing on Kapferer's distinction between hierarchical and egaritarianist nationalism, the author argues that the event created a moment of religious hierarchical nationalism in late imperial Chinese history; but such a form of nationalism was soon replaced but a more modern egaritarianist nation-state ideology which then led to the Republican revolution. Methodologically, the author treats the analysis as forming a part of a historical anthropology, with its focus on ritual representations of critica events. |
