英文摘要 | This study is a step toward providing a better understanding of (1) cadets' background and their English learning behaviors; (2) factors related to their English achievement, (3) the content of the new American Language Course, (3) how students and teachers think about the new teaching material. It also sheds light on (4) the differences of students' English achievement and their learning behaviors between pre-test (held in 1996) and post-test. (held in 1997). Two groups of people served as subjects for this study. The first group includes 1034 freshman cadets in 1996 and 928 sophomores in 1997. The second group contains 24 English teachers and 223 junior cadets of the Armed Forces Academies in 1997. The first group students were asked to take an English test (Secondary Level English Proficiency Test) and to fill out questionnaires dealing with their motivation, attitudes, beliefs, strategy use, anxiety, etc. As for the second group, they provided their ions about the new teaching material by filling out the American Language Course Questionnaire. Along with descriptive statistics of mean, standard deviation, and percentages of the research instrument, a Pearson Product-Correlation Coefficient, MANOVA, One Way Tukey test, and Multiple Regression analysis were processed by SPSS.. Findings include (1) the exploration of the reliability and validity of the research instrument, (2) factors related to cadets' English achievement, (3) cadets' background, and learning behaviors, (4) the analysis of the new curriculum and teachers' and cadets' opinions about the new teaching material, as well as (5) the differences of cadets' English achievement and learning behaviors between pre-test (held in 1996) and post-test (held in 1997). In addition, some curricular and instructional implica ions are proposed in details. |
