英文摘要 | With the rapid development of the worldwide computer networks. an information global village has been formed. Through different networks users can obtain information and exchange messages with each other at any remote corner of the world without leaving their computer terminals. This advanced technology has particular implications to the teaching and learning of English writing in a second language setting. It creates an authentic environment for learners of English as they communicate across geographical boundaries; it also helps them achieve better understanding of people with different cultural backgrounds. Most literature published recently covers technical set-ups, instructional designs, and teaching experience. Studies about the actual influence of this new instructional medium on language learning are yet needed. The present study investigated the teaching and learning of English in a first-year English writing program in the Foreign Languages and Literature Department at National Cheng Kung University. Students participating in this program were linked with classes of native as well as non-native speakers of English abroad, and discussed assigned topics through e-mail and long-distance conferencing. The objective of this program was to integrate the use of the latest technology with the essence of communicative language learning and process writing approaches. The evaluation process focused on investigating the progress of the students' writing ability on assigned topics. The findings of this study were positive. That is, the researchers found that exchanging messages through internet can help learners develop new communication skills, and strengthen their command in English. |
