英文摘要 | Decades of epidemiological studies suggest that the risk of leukemia and brain tumors could be associated with elevated exposure to extremely-low-frequency magnetic fields (ELF) emitted from power lines, electrical appliances and electrical mechanical equipment. Although the causal association between ELF and risk of certain cancers has been inconclusive, ELF's potential to become a significant public health issue should not be ignored due to it's ubiquity in the environment. On the assumption that there is causal relationship between elevated residential exposure (<100 meters from high-voltage transmission lines) to ELF and the risks of leukemia and brain tumors, it is estimated that in 1992 some 27.2 (95% confidence interval (CI) 5.7 ∼ 52.0 )incident cases of leukemia and 30.3 (95% CI 10.6 ∼ 53.6) incident cases of brain tumors can be attributable to such elevated ELF exxposure. It is also estimated that people with elevated residential exposure may have suffered from an additconal risk of leukemia of 1.5/10 �� (95% CI 0.3/10 �獺� 2.8/10 �� ),and an additional risk of brain tumors of 1.6/10 �� (95% CI 0.6/10 �獺� 2.9/10 �� ).Interpretation of the results from the present study must be cautious not only because our analysis was based on a roughly estimated proportion of exposed population but also because previous stuides failed to clarify the reliable relative risk estimate, effective dose, and dose - response relationship which are essentially needed in risk assessment. Although there is no urgent need of immense action to reducing ambient ELF, there is a need, from public health viewpoint, to consider possible interim preventive measures. The concept of 'prudent avoidance' proposed some years ago in the United States appears to be the best temporary solution. |
