英文摘要 | Bamboos of 6 species in the plantations in Nan-tou and Tainan,Taiwan, were felled in August and October 1992 and April 1993 forthe study of insect infestation on the culm. The whole plant wascross cut into 5 parts of equal length. The top, middle and bottomparts were brought to the laboratory of National Chung HsingUniversity, where they were cross cut into sections of 25 cm inlength each. One was taken randomly from each part, halvedlongitudinally, and placed in a plastic cylinder 16 cm in diameter and30 cm long. Both ends of the cylinder were covered by muslin toprevent insects from passing through. The insects and their passingholes on the culm were examined periodically. The bamboopowderpost beetle, Dinoderus msnutus (Fabricius), was the only insectfound to attack the bamboo culm within 300 days after the bamboowas felled. The result showed that gigantic bamboo and ma bamboowere most severely attacked by the beetle, followed by thornybamboo and long-shoot bamboo; moso bamboo was the least. Makinobamboo was completely resistant to the beetle attack as either theadults or their passing holes were never found on the culm. In mostcases, a greater number of the passing holes were found on themiddle part of the culm. It implies that the beetle preferred themiddle part to the top or the bottom. When viewed on cross section, most passing holes or tunnels were found around the inner layer, fewon the outer. In general, the age of the bamboo was not an obviousfactor in its susceptibility to the beetle; however, the lower part ofma bamboo and the upper part of gigantic bamboo of 5 years oldshowed more susceptibility to the beetle than those of 1 year old.The culm felled in October was free from the beetle attack; however,it was the most serious in April, less serious in August. The beetlesand the passing holes could be found in 15 days after felling in April, and the number increased rapidly in 60 days. It reveals that the beetles infested the culm in the plantations, continuing theirdevelopment inside the culm when brought indoor even while it wasgetting drier. The population of the beetle reached its peak in April, and dropped to the lowest in October. |
