英文摘要 | This is a study of the term ‘bukuk’ (不穀), which is found in the Tzuo Chuan (左傳) and Kuo Yü (國語). This article is divided into four parts. The first is an introduction. In the second, the occurances of “bukuk’ in the Tzuo Chuan and Kuo Yü are listed. And from these examples, we find that most of the Kings of Ch’u (楚) called themselves ‘bukuk’, that ordinary people could not use this term to refer to themselves, and that this term had the same meanínε as the terms ‘kua jen’, (寡人) and ‘ku’ (孤) that were used in northern China at the time. The use of this word ref1ects the strict social stratification that existed in archaic China. In the third part, the interpretations of ‘bukuk’ by various scholars, such as Cheng Hsuan (鄭玄), Tu Yü (杜預), and K’ung Ying-ta (孔穎達) are considered, but their concepts and explanations of ‘bukuk’ prove to be vague and incomplete. In part four, an attempt is made to provide a c1earexplanation of the term ‘bukuk’ We’ll see that ‘bukuk’ is actua11y a Ch’u dialect term and that this term is also directly related to the word ‘pu’ (僕) in modern Japanese. In other words, the Japanese word ‘pu’, expresses both the phonetic sound of ‘bukuk’ and that the two words are practically synonymous. In this study, the ‘Wu yü’ (吳語) sound system of Japanese was used to investigate the term ‘bukuk’, and this system may serve as a useful tool in the study of the archaic Ch’u system language. |
