英文摘要 | Greek civilization is the cradle of Western civilization. The hard barrier of geography with its vast wall of mountain, its moody river, and its islands, scattered near and far, worked against unity, and so did the proud Self-love and Provincialism of the separate states. Sparta and Athens with their contrasting systems become the leaders of the two types of education among the Greeks. Sparta was conservative and used a sort of military education to prevent change. Education and war were synonymous. All means were applied to the training of the young. Obedience to law and regular authority, courage, military skill, physical vigor, and determination were educational aims. In one word, Strangth wa8 the Predominant factor in Spatan education. The development of Athenian democracy was one of the remarkable achievements of the world. By the opening of the fifth cetury B. C., Athens has laid the foundations of her democratic constitution and this was of the greatest importance to western political freedom and Western Public education. The free citizenry consumed most of its time in Public service, giving its attention to the political talk in the marketplace or in the general assembly. Reflecting a far broader conception of citizenship, Athenian education set out to provide youth with an intellectual and aesthetic, as well as a physical base for a well-rounded whole personality. Distincted from her counterpart, Athenian educational priority was aesthetic education. This topic deals mainly with the practices of Spartan and Athenian education. As to the educational theories of Greek education, the readers will refer to the other topic which will be done by the author in the near future. |
