| 英文摘要 | This study examines the changes in the livelihoods of itinerant fishermen in the 19th century and of littoral society in the dune belt north of the Lanyang River. Before the cultivation of the Kavalan region by the Wusha and other farming groups in the 19th century, itinerant fishermen were active in the waters west of the dune belt pursuing marine livelihood activities such as fishing and smuggling. The impediment of the Yilan River and unfavourable farming conditions in the low humidity zone meant that these fishermen were uninterested in moving to cultivate the land. However, with the official implementation of the "protecting the Aborigines" (shufan) land rights system in the early 19th century together with regional economic development and changes in the water environment, in the middle of the 19th century, itinerant fishermen gradually gained the right to land in the dunes and settled down to form a colony. This case reveals a history of settlement different from the "lineage" cultural strategy found among local fishermen in Guangdong. North of theLanyang River in the Kavalan region during the Qing Dynasty, fishermen took advantage of the government's "protecting the Aborigines" land rights system to gain the right to cultivate dunes and legitimise their settlement. Under the "khan-koo" (Taiwanese beach seine-fishing) mode of livelihood, a cross-village littoral social community was gradually formed. The history of the settlement of sand dune fishermen reflects how the marine environment has shaped the development of the littoral society. |
