| 英文摘要 | The study of "translation" in modern China has long been a significant research topic, encompassing concepts of cross-culture, cross-language, and even globalization and colonialism. Modern China not only translated a vast number of foreign works but also actively attempted to convert its own classical texts into modern vernacular language-a process known as "translating classical texts into modern language." This trend surged in the 1920s and 1930s, becoming a focal point of controversy between classical and vernacular languages. It permeated literary creation, book publishing, language education, and even dialect collection, serving as a core discussion of the vernacular literature movement and profoundly influencing the teaching materials and educational methods in Chinese communities. Therefore, it is a topic worthy of exploration.Within the broader framework of translation studies, the phenomenon of translating classical texts into modern language in modern China also provides valuable case studies for Roman Jakobson's concept of "intralingual translation." It provides a critical lens through which to examine the boundaries between different languages and relationships between original texts and their translations. This article explores the theoretical implications of intralingual translation, including comparisons with similar cases in other cultures to highlight the uniqueness of modern China. The primary focus is on analyzing key cases, such as the discussions by Guo Moruo, Gu Jiegang, Hu Shi, Li Jinxi, Wei Jiangong, Qian Xuantong, and He Rong, to examine how the Chinese scholars of the 1920s and 1930s used translation to preserve traditional culture. This study also aims to reflect on the inherent traditional values and explore the broader possibilities for language modernization through translation. |
