英文摘要 | During the Enlightenment movement in the West in the 18th century, traditional Chinese plays played a significant role in shaping and developing the 'China Mania' trend, making unparalleled contributions to the 'westward dissemination' of Chinese culture. However, this dissemination often leads to cultural misinterpretation or replacement, causing academic anxiety. This situation is closely related to translation activities which serve as a fundamental means for spreading Chinese traditional plays westward but inherently involve cultural distortion. Therefore, it is inevitable for translated Chinese plays to be misunderstood or replaced. Using two examples - 'The Injustice Done to Dou E' and 'Lady Precious Stream,' this article analyzes why cultural misinterpretation occurs during translation: its basic characteristics, nature of issues involved, and how we should understand them. The conclusion is made then that the misinterpretation of Chinese traditional opera in cross-cultural translation lies in the translation process, resulting ultimately in cultural displacement. However, this situation is historical and as cultural exchanges deepen, these misunderstandings will gradually fade away with a better understanding between different cultures. The "westward dissemination" of Chinese traditional opera plays an important role in shaping Chinese cultural identity. Yet, constructing cultural identity is also a historical process and with the deepening of cultural exchanges, cultural identity will gradually take shape. |
