英文摘要 | This paper attempts to demonstrate a ”racist past” in a ”multicultural present” by adopting Foucauldian discourse analysis, cultivating and rooting the protagonist Naomi Nakane's ethnical and sexual subjectivities in Canada in Joy Kogawa's second novel ”Itsuka”. It starts with a brief discussion on the institutionalized racism, enacted by the Canadian government in terms of Foucauldian discursive formations and power, implementing on, or even manipulating, the Japanese Canadians. The focus is subsequently shifted to how Naomi, perplexed and stigmatized by the domination, is ethnically rooted with the escort of her two aunts-Obasan and Aunt Emily-by first reminiscing the development and contribution of Kogawa's debut novel Obasan and then investigating its continuity in Itsuka. Besides the ethnical basis, Naomi is sexually rooted on grounds of the presence of and relationship with a male character Father Cedric, who plays a crucial role in arousing Naomi's awareness and interrogation of her sexual subjectivities. As the title suggests, I argue that Naomi and Father Cedric ”are journeying home” together in the sense of ethnical and sexual rooting in Canada after the success of the redress-an indicator of the emerging ”multicultural present.” |
