英文摘要 | The critical analysis of German history-especially of the Third Reich-represents a pivotal theme in the writings of W. G. Sebald (1944-2001). In his intricate prose works the author resumes the crimes of the National Socialists and their helpers and coins the term of a "conspiracy of silence" which, Sebald claims, sums up the main characteristic of the atmosphere in Germany's post-war society. However, Sebald's analysis of the Germans' psyche goes deeper than it seems at first glance. The author's aim is to make his readers understand that the true base on which the ideology of the Nazis could prosper is actually a specific bourgeois mentality which had started to evolve in the European enlightenment. Especially bourgeois virtues such as ambition and cleanliness as well as their connection with the fast evolving modern fields of science and technology, that eventually enabled Hitler's regime to carry out the plan to cleanse a whole people, appear to be crucial factors in Sebald's work.The aim of this study is to analyze Sebald's criticism of the hygienic discourse of bourgeois society using the observations Jacques Austerlitz makes in the "unnaturally clean" environment of Germany through which Sebald presents German civil society as paradigm for the severe side effects of the rational view on the world requested by the enlightenment. I will use these observations and discuss them in comparison with Sebald's descriptions of the silk industry of the Third Reich, bourgeois baths, and, finally, with the ghetto of Theresienstadt as-topoi which are all mirror images of the bourgeois ideal of a completely hygienic environment. These institutions are all structurally related and are characteristic of bourgeois modernity and its theme-ultimate hygiene of society and its inhabitants. |
