英文摘要 | Prolongation of life can be achieved through advanced technology and medical care system. Taiwan has become an aging society since 1993 with 10.57% of the population aged over 65 years old. It is predicted that the percentage will increase to 12% in 2030. Ageing process converts healthy adults to frail ones due to changes in many aspects, including diminished neurotransmission, sensory loss, decreased muscle strength, limited range of motion and decreased maximal heart rate. Through adequate exercise program, the disabilities caused by ageing can be postponed which can lead to an improvement of life quality. Stretching exercises can increase joint range of motion and prevent muscle injuries through increased flexibility. Walking is helpful for the aged population and for people with relatively sedentary life style. Balance function can be improved through strengthening lower extremity and back muscles. In addition, progressive resistance exercise training can improve muscle power, endurance and thus avoid falling. Some researchers also indicate that tai chi can increase endurance, coordination and balance ability of the seniors. Recently, vibration training and video game-based exercises are proposed to be incorporated into exercise training program to gain better functional improvement. In conclusion, health problems in the seniors have become an important issue and the physical therapy intervention is beneficial. |
