英文摘要 | Tea is the most characteristic of Taiwan agricultural products. Originating in the Mainland China, Taiwanese tea, however, is superior to Chinese tea. The introduction of tea from Fujian to Taiwan began in about 1800. The early development of Taiwan tea was very slow, only a small amount of it was exported to Fujian. After Taiwan opened its doors to foreigners in 1858, a large number of western businessmen came to Taiwan for trading, bringing new impetus to Taiwan. John Dodd, an English businessman who charged the Dodd & Co, began to export Taiwan tea to New York in 1869, and it was successfully accepted by the market. Since then, Taiwan's tea industry had developed so rapidly that, a decade later, tea became the largest of Taiwan's exports. Taiwan's tea industry, in its production and marketing structure and capital maneuvering, largely inherited the experiences of Fujian. At the earlier stages of development, the tea industry was controlled by foreign operators. After 1875, many Chinese businessmen joined the ranks; foreigners no longer monopolized the market. Despite this, foreign operators still dominated over the system of tea export. In New York market, Taiwan tea always could beat other rivals with higher price and profit, mainly due to its unique aroma and taste. However, the speculation of Chinese tea traders, a bad habit deep rooted in Fujian tea makers, once deteriorated tea quality and their good reputation, resulting in falling price and poor sales. This, at the same time, contributed to the emerging popularity of Paochung tea, which coupled with Oolong tea, became two major brands of Taiwan tea for export. Taiwan's tea-producing areas are mainly distributed in hilly areas of northern Taiwan. Due to strong exports, tea industry led to changes in Taiwan's industrial structure. Tea industry was one of the key factors contributing to Taiwan's social and economic changes in the late Qing Dynasty. After 250 years of development, Taiwan's political and economic center had transferred from Tainan to Taipei. Among the so-called three treasures in the late Qing Dynasty ── "tea, sugar, camphor," tea is the only one item that remained in its good reputation. |
