英文摘要 | This study was concerned with the learning of English vocabulary by technological college and five-year junior college students. It aimed to investigate the frequency of use of vocabulary learning strategies and how useful such strategies were perceived. The survey was also designed to explore the possible effect of length of learning English on the use of vocabulary strategies and the perceived usefulness of these strategies. A vocabulary learning strategy questionnaire was administrated to technological college and 5-year junior college students to inquire learners' use and perceived usefulness of strategies. It was found that the most preferred strategy category was cognitive category, whereas the least preferred one was social (discovery). The most useful strategy category was cognitive category, while the least useful category was metacognitive category. The results revealed that there were discrepancies between the frequency of use and perceived usefulness of strategies. Contrary to the findings of previous studies, it was found that the less experienced learners (five-year junior college students) used strategies more frequently and used wider range of strategies than more experienced learners (technological college students). The finding of this study suggests that EFL teachers can help students develop effective learning strategies and ultimately improve their English abilities. |
