英文摘要 | Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children depicts the story of Saleem Sinai and Midnight’s children, whose history mirrors the history of India’s independence. Rusdie creates Saleem as a mock epic hero. One of the most powerful midnight’s children, who were born on the midnight of August 15, 1947, at the exact moment India gained its independence from the British rule. The novel is commented as a fable of the birth of a nation, which interweaves many allusions of different mythological Gods and Goddesses. Shiva, the God of Destruction, and Paravati, Shiva’s wife, are the names of the other two powerful midnight’s children; together three of them form a triangle relationship which constructs the main thread of the narrative. Moreover, Ruside employs the different features of Kali the Ferocious Devi Goddess, Vishnu the Preserver, Lakshmi Goddess of Wealth, to indicate indirectly the function of traditional mythology in creating a modern India. My paper examines the rewriting of Hindu mythology in modern Indian life, a writing strategy that links the tradition and modernity. This variation presents a critical parody on the twisted face of the independence movement, which not only exposes the destructive impact of political and religious fanaticism, but also suggests the redemption of humanity from the hell created by an alienation from the universal spirit of Brahma, the Great Ultimate. My analysis shows that thought the rewriting of these mythological deities, Rushdie enables the reader to reexamine the value and meaning of the traditional culture in the context of the catastrophic loss of the ancient wisdom in the modern world. The paper concludes that at the crossroad of modernity and tradition, humans need to find a new way of reintegrating the universal values into the texture of modern life, which has been a living principle in the ancient Hindu culture. |
