英文摘要 | In the Southern Song, Siming area became a national center in multiple fields: politics, economy and culture. Being an important harbor for overseas trade and close to the capital Linan, the economy of Siming significantly flourished, along with the education, which inspired literary ethos and continually cultivated a number of civil talents in this area. Siming thus became a highly developed region in the area. Siming thus became a highly developed region in the Southern Song dynasty. The collective effort of local elite families was one of the main factors producing this development. In Siming, since the middle period of the Northern Song, some elite families, such as the Shi, the Yuan, the Lou and the Wang family, established a solid base for local cultural development. In the southern song more families participated in this trend of Confucian education. The networks of elite families in Siming gradually expanded, which accelerated the progress of domestic culture. The Gao family was an important member of the Siming elite group. A case study of the Gao family could improve our acquaintance about the elite families in Siming area as well as the literati networks in the Song dynasty. For this purpose, this article explores how did the Gao family become and elite kin group, what kind of academic tradition this family bequeathed for generations, and how did the Gao interact with other elite families in Siming. Funerary inscriptions were important respires for scholars to research the history of families in the Song period. Although the members of the Gao family played important roles in Siming, available resources were not enough for historians to trace their lineage tree, analyze the expansion of this kin group and comprehend the interactions between this kin group and their local community. Fortunately, a funerary inscription—“Song gu Fanshi furen muzhiming”—provides valuable information for historians to reconstruct lineage tree of the Gao and realize the early period of this family’s growth. The Gao case demonstrates the significant value of funerary inscriptions to scholars who are interested in the history of the Song elite families. |
