英文摘要 | Taiwanese and Japanese cultures are closely related, both geographically and historically, (Taiwan was colonized by Japanese, 1895-1945). As shown in their languages, Japanese society is more hierarchical than Taiwanese society. Previous research shows a more hierarchical society produces less humorous people (Lin 1976; Abe 1995). In this study, I attempt to duplicate this result, using the self-evaluations of 200 university students in Taichung, Taiwan and Kagawa, Japan. Based on Liao (1998a), which studies Taiwanese beliefs about humor, 12 questions were devised to compare Japanese and Taiwanese senses of humor on a five-poing Likert scale, 1 for "strong disagreement" and 5 for "strong agreement." Two-way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) with the Scheffe's Test reveals that the four groups-Japanese males (JM). Japanese females (JF), Taiwanese males (TM), and Taiwanese females (TF)-were not significantly different in five items, but were significantly different in the other seven items; i.e., Japanese and Taiwanese have more differences than similarities. Japanese women especially think themselves to be humorless. Frustrated by this belief, they have adjusted their definition of 'a sense of humor.' |
