英文摘要 | The purpose of this formative evaluation research was to improve the quality of <<Fruit Ice Cream>>, a children’s educational television program developed by Taiwan Public Television Service Foundation (PTS). In order to investigate the attraction of viewers’ attention, the appeal and the effectiveness of this program, the research team sampled a total of 264 children from 15 educational institutions. Data were collected through observation of children’s viewing behavior (under the revised Palmer’s distractor technique condition), structured interview and paper-and-pencil test on children’s understanding of the program. Three research findings were reported below. This program successfully attracted children attention. In general, those units that won children’s attention include story time, the drama played by fruit grandma (the main character of the program), field trip, parent/child exercises and MTV. The concentration rates of sampled children on these mentioned units were above 95%. The units children paid least attention to appeared regularly at the end of the program, i.e., puppies’ review of today’s lesson and the postlude. However, the concentration rates of these two units still approached 90%. Ninety-four percent of the interviewed children claimed that they enjoyed watching this program; while 93% liked the fruit grandma character. Parent/child exercises, prelude, story time, field trip, and the conversation between fruit grandma and the guest were among the top five most appealing units of this program. Eighty-five to ninety percent of the interviewed children claimed that they liked these mentioned units. The units that were least charming to children were singing performance by kindergarten children and the jumping rabbit units (a rabbit character dancing with the music along with several children dressing up like carrots), which won only 70% of the interviewed children’s vote. Children criticized that these two units were “boring” and didn’t like the appearance of the rabbit character. Forty percent of the children had never watched this program, Fruit Ice Cream, before. The messages that appeared repeatedly during the program was remembered better than those appeared just once. The correct rates were 91% and 75% respectively. Female children learned significantly better than male children through linguistics channels, such as story telling, conversation between grandma and the guests. Children from city and single-parent families were more capable of distinguishing the gist of the story from its plot than children from country and normal families. Compared to kindergarten children, lower grade elementary school students scored significantly higher on the test of program gist, detail memorization as well as music recognition. In summary, this program, Fruit Ice Cream, successfully attracted the attention of most children viewers. Children viewers found most of the program units appealing, and learned lessons from this program. Three suggestions were made based upon findings. 1. PTS should let more audience know the showing time and channel of this program. 2.The jumping rabbit and the singing performance units should be redesigned. 3.When making the decision as to what should be taught in the program, and how the production team should consider children’s varied backgrounds, including the differences of living areas, ethnic groups, genders, living experiences and atmospheres. The gist of the lesson should be addressed repeatedly and skillfully throughout the program. |
