英文摘要 | Unlike other general novels, Vladimir Nobakov's Pale Fire is a novel constructed by poem, commentary, and index, and considered by many as "a Jack-in-the-box...a chess problem, a cat-and-mouse game...a do-it-yourself novel." The elaborate interplay between reader and author, the counter-viewpoints among Kinbote, Shade, the supposed readers, and Nabokov, and the back-forth shift of time, space and place in the novel build up "the great conspiracy" to challenge us readers in different levels of perception, as Nabokov himself asserts that "the objective existence of all events" is "a form of impure imagination" and "whatever the mind grasps, it does with the assistance of creative fancy. " therefore, readers of Pale Fire must not rest upon the "text"-all the supposed integral validity of thoughts, actions, and memories-as they do to the conventional novels, but rather upon the "texture"-the correspondences and coincidences created by thoughts, actions, and memories in human's mind. Pale Fire makes us realize that from the moment when a work is completed, it is totally out of its author's control. Furthermore, the full understanding and communication among human beings as destined to be unattainable forever. |
