英文摘要 | Eagle's syndrome, also known as symptomatic elongated styloid process, is a symptom complex that may be the source of a sore throat, craniofacial and cervical pain. The symptoms of Eagles syndrome can be attributed to various conditions such as aural neuralgia, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, dental pain and temporo-mandibular joint disorders. Although the incidence of an elongated styloid process is fairly high, only a small proportion of patients exhibit symptoms associated with Eagle's syndrome. We present a 34-year-old woman who had chronic tonsillitis with Eagle's syndrome complicated by cervical emphysema and pneumomediastinum after a bilateral tonsillectomy and intraoral amputation of the right styloid process under endotracheal general anesthesia. Postoperatively, she complained of orthopnea, neck and upper chest swelling and pain. The symptoms of subcutaneous emphysema and pneumomediastinum gradually subsided 7 days later with prophylactic antibiotic and intensive care. Therefore, if a patient complains of respiratory embarrassment after a tonsillectomy or amputation of a styloid process, it is important to recognize subcutaneous emphysema and pneumomediastinum in order to provide immediate management. |
