英文摘要 | The effect of fuel loading on critical cores of Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) fueled Material Testing Reactors (MTRs) was studied using the standard computer codes WIMSD/4 and CITATION. The fuel loading in a fuel element was either varied by changing the fuel density in the fuel meat without changing the number of fuel plates per fuel element or by varying the number of fuel plates while keeping the fuel density constant. It was found necessary to calculate the optimal water channel width for the each fuel density to keep the reactor critically moderated. The calculated values were found to be in good agreement with the typical design of an MTR. The optimal water channel width was calculated by optimizing the infinite multiplication factor (k )using a one dimensional transport theory lattice code WIMS-D/4. In both types of fuel loadings, the dimensions of standard and control fuel elements change with the change in fuel loading. Using these optimized dimensions, critical cores were determined for different fuel loading using a three dimensional diffusion theory code CITATION. Both critical mass and volume were found to decrease with an increase in the fuel density. An increase in the number of fuel plates per fuel element was having a minor effect on the critical volume but the critical mass was found to decrease continuously and significantly. |
