英文摘要 | A study of the population dynamics of two roosts of the Formosan leaf-nosed bat (Hipposideros terasensis) in the Nantou area, Central Taiwan, was conducted from June 1994 to May 1996. These two roosts included a non-breeding colony and a colony with breeding activity between May and June. The activity patterns of these two colonies were also investigated between July 1995 and June 1996. The population dynamics of both colonies presented a similar trend throughout the year. In both cases, bats settled in the roosts in February and March and left for hibernation in November and December. No bat stayed in either roost from December to next February. However, during March to November, the changes of these two colonies sizes showed different patterns. In the non-breeding colony, bat arrived at the roost in February, and the number of individuals increased quickly in March to the peak number of more than 600 bats, and then hold a colony size of couple hundred bats in the next several months until September. The number of bats size decreased quickly during September to November. On the other hand, the size of the breeding colony increased gradually from March to May, and showed a peak colony size in June and July. The highest number appeared in September and October (but less than 100 bats). The number of bats decreased quickly in November. However, the time of most bats in the breeding colony left their roost was about two months later than the non-breeding colony. The factors primarily affecting the change of population size were (1) seasonal migration of bats, (2) short term movement between roosts, and (3) birth of the youngs of the breeding colony. The study of activity pattern showed that the timing of activities was significantly correlated to the time of sunset and sunrise, as well as light intensity. The two colonies showed either a unimodal or bimodal activity pattern throughout the night in different months. The difference may be mainly due to the breeding state of colonies, especially during breeding season. The light intensity of emergence of Hipposideros terasensis at dusk was the lowest when compared with those of Scotophilus kuklii and Pipistrellus abramus. |
