英文摘要 | This paper traces the social and economic conditions of the Song Dynasty that procided a setting for the interaction between Buddhism and printing. The Song Dynasty, under constant threat of incasion from its neighbors, the Liao, the Hsia and the Kim, and civil unrest within its boundaries, was notorious for imposing restrictions on every aspect of its citizens' lives, In order to show some semblance of freedom, the Song government had an almost unrestricted policy on religion for its citizens. Citizens may exercise their religious freedom both in practice and in expressing their opinions about it. Under favorable political conditions, Buddhism did not only take root in China, but also flourished as it had never done before. As the number of converts and religious workers increased, there was a need for readily available texts of prayers, catechism as well as other religious writings. It is believed that this sudden increase in the need for fast and massive printing of Buddhist sutras during the Song Dynasty was one of the contributing factors that led to the development of movable print. After exploring the motivations as well as the methods and categories of Buddhist printing, the authors present an annotated bibliography of fifty titles of Song edition of Buddhist sutras that they have examined. Even though tens of thousands of. Buddhist sutras were printed during the Song Dynasty, very few of them survive today because of war, natural disasters and wanton destruction at the hands of ignorant men over the ages. These fifty titles represent a combination of the total collections of Song edition of rare Buddhist sutras in three libraries in Taipei and Beijing. |
