英文摘要 | In cognitive psychology, the traditional view of individual experiences is that they have little significance beyond serving as the raw material for generalizations. Recent research suggests, however, that individual experiences, stored as such, actually play a prominent role in cognition. This paper seeks to incorporate this insight in the study of Universal Grammar, specifically, in the study of the null subject phenomenon. The proposal retains standard ideas about the invariant aspects of Universal Grammar and the areas in which variability is allowed (i.e., parameters), but eliminates abstract parameter values in favor of pools of stored experiences, or instances. This approach, applied to the problem of null subjects and their acquisition, can explain some characteristics of the phenomenon that are awkward for standard linguistic theories, while retaining the major insights those theories have provided. |
