英文摘要 | This study examined the impact of a learning contract upon students' self-directed learning competencies in the author's course of Introduction to Education for college freshmen. Students' gains in self-directed learning competencies were measured by pre-and posttests. The effects of contract learning were also examined by students' course evaluation, weekly journals, and self-refection on their own contract learning at the end of the semester. Factor analysis showed that three significant components of self-directed learning were: students' competencies for self-assessing, planning, and finding human resources. The use of learning contract in the course demonstrated a model for self-directed learning, and helped to facilitate the development of learners' self-directed learning competencies, particularly on the aspects of self-assessing and planning. Needs assessment was a major step toward the success of contract learning in this course. The effectiveness of contract learning had a strong relationship with learners' readiness and the subjects of their learning. The large size of the class and the fixed scope of learning contents challenged the effects of using contract learning as an instructional strategy. In general, students had a difficulty in understanding the essence of self-assessment, and this was probably due to the influence of traditional educational thoughts. As a whole, students had high value toward contract learning. However, it was also found that students with higher self-directed learning competencies showed the more positive attitudes toward learning contract. Finally, this study also provides suggestions for future use of a learning contract in practice and research. |
