中文摘要 | 本文旨在研究文章主題結構(topical structure)對寫作品質(writing quality)之影響。本研究主要根據Stephen P.Witte(1983)所設計的分析方式,從73篇美國加州州立San Bernardino大學新生入學英文分級測驗中,選取8篇得低分(2分)即8篇高得分(5分)的文章,分析高、低得分文章中句子長度(lenght)、句法(syntax)的差異。文中較具顯著意義的是T單位(T-units)在平行句(parallel)、平行層次(parallel progressions)、延展性平行層次(extended parallel progressions)、順序層次(sequential progressions)以及主題深度(topical depth)中的統計結果,並進一步比較不同文章主題結構對寫作品質之影響及意義,以期在教導學生英文寫作時能對文章主題結構有更進一步的了解,並增進英文寫作能力。 |
英文摘要 | The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between the topical structure of students' expository essays and what is judged as their "quality." From seventy-three essays which have been rated holistically by two readers on a six-point scale, eight essays of the lower score--"2" and eight essays of the higher score--"5" were used as the main data. The two groups of essays were compared with respect to several text features--length, syntax, and topical structure. The topical structure variables were shown to be highly useful in distinguishing between the two groups of texts. Particularly significant were mean number of T-units per topic; the mean number of T-units per parallel, extended parallel, and sequential progressions; the percentages of three types of progression, and the percentages of Type 3 and Type 5 sentences. The importance of these findings is discussed, and their implications for teaching and research are suggested. |
