英文摘要 | This essay aims to define tuifei 頹廢or decadence in the Chinese poetic tradition. It demonstrates for the first time that decadent poetry as represented by the Palace Style poetry (gongti shi 宮體詩 )of Xiao Gang 蕭綱 (503-551)and other Southern Dynasties poets is, among other things, a critique and challenge to the canonical notion and practice of poetry. According to the tradition established by canonical documents such as The Book of History (Shang shu << 尚書 >>and the "Great Preface" to The Book of Songs (Shi jing << 詩經 >>, poetry is a product of a poet's spontaneous, natural, and sincere response to historical events. Great poetry is viewed as what best conveys the poet's feelings and thoughts in this stimulation-response process, especially those written in a natural, transparent, and straightforward style. It should play an important role in people's social and political life, because it is a tool whereby the government could maintain socio-political stability and harmony. By situating Xiao Gang's Palace Style poetry in the context of such canonical tradition, the present essay delineates in great detail how Palace Style poetry works to subvert it by deliberately truning poetry into a lighthearted entertainment and a highly artificial, sophisticated craft. It devotes all its attention to refining the surface of the text, often at the expense of its deeper meaning and significance. Thus, what it practices is tantamount to a kind of aestheticism which aims to separate poetry from its sublime canonical roles and associations. It is small wonder that Palace Style poetry has been constantly and violently attacked by traditional criticism. However, the significance of Palace Style poetry is not merely a negative one, because its challenge to the fundamental assumptions in the Chinese tradition brought about broadened views of literature and language without which a more imaginative and sophisticated poetry would have been impossible. |
