| 英文摘要 | The dicto-comp method is one of the teaching devices for ESL writing classes in which students are engaged in an activity similar to dictation taking while at the same time being guided to work on their compositions. Years of teaching with quite encouraging results, especially with the inclusion of visual adis (e.g. pictures, slides, transparencies, videos, etc.), have convinced us of the merit of this particular technique with reference to first-year class writing at Wen Tzao Junior College of Modern Languages. One of the purposes of this paper is to illustrate how the picture dicto-comp method prcticed at Wen Tzao is actually carried out in a writing class for EFL students at low levels. This paper comprises complete lesson plans with a set of specific teaching aims, and the rationale for the method. The lesson plans consist of three steps, namely, pre-writing, actual writing and post-writing. In pre-writing, various activities are enumerated to show how students can be guided to express themselves orally about picture(s) used for the lesson with teacher-suggested target lexical items, phrases, and sentence patterns. Then, students' instructions for the teacher to follow, when students are actually involved in the writing process, are specified. Finally, post-writing touches upon how students could effectively revise their written work with the help of the teacher's correction symbols. The use of picture dicto-comp helps students at their early stage of English writing in the folowing ways: they will be highly motivated in language learning through pictures as a stimulus for language practice; they will have a grasp of the conventions of English writing; they will develop an awareness of simple English grammar and of a variety of words; and they may also have a chance to put them into practive in speaking, listening, and writing contexts. Last, but not least, students can feel "empowered" as regards their work. All of these are "healthy writing roots." Only after beginners have these roots can they soar on to greater heights. Language learmers should learn to walk before they can run. |
