英文摘要 | In past five years, numerous reports on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis have been published, and have shown that this method is a useful and accurate method for the early diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis. Moreover, this assay has also been proven to be more sensitive over methods of conventional bacteriology and immunoassay. Sensitivity of the PCR for diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis is around 63-100% and specificity is 88-100%. In addition to the advantage of a rapid diagnostic method, this assay can be also used for assessing treatment response in patients with tuberculous meningitis. The incidence of tuberculous meningitis is expected to increase substantially in the next 10 years, particularly with the presence of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), PCR may thus allow clinicians a convenient procedure for the rapid and early diagnosis of this disorder, subsequently improving its prognosis. |
