英文摘要 | From the upper ocean salinity distribution northeast of Taiwan, as derived from data collected in early September 1991. it appears that the isohalines show a clear, wavy pattern with a wavelength of about 110 km, which may well represent the meander of the Kuroshio northeast of Taiwan. It is shown that the observed shear flow (Kuroshio), computed from CTD data, is in fact the energy source for this meander. A quasi-geostrophic model of a three-layer fluid on an –f-plane is used to study the mixed barotropic-baroclinic instability of the Kuroshio northeast of Taiwan. The model has a basic flow with a horizontal shear only in the uppermost layer, while only a weak density difference exists between the middle and lowest layers. The predicted wavelength of the most unstable wave for Kuroshio is 175km. which is somewhat longer than the one observed (110km). Its growth rate is 21.6×10-6sec1, and its phase speed is 0.66m/sec downstream. |
