中文摘要 | 本篇研究之目的旨在評估美國賓州大學新進臺灣研究生之一般英文能力,進而探 討此等研究生,為完成學術專業領域之進修所認知的語言困難;再據以評估強化當前臺灣英 語教學的需求,以為未來課程規畫之參考。 為此目的,三十七名美國賓州大學新進臺灣研究生應邀填答一份作者自行設計的問卷,以探 索在化英語聽、說、讀、寫四種能力間,是否有顯著的差異存在;且他們的托福成績能否適 度地反應他們英語聽、說、讀、寫的能力。 統計的結果顯示,這四種能力間確實有顯著差異存在;但薛費氏檢定顯示,研究生的聽與說 、還有讀與寫間並無顯著差異。此外,相對而言,研究生們認為讀較其他三者來的簡單。而 托福成績與研究生四種語言能力的綜合分數有顯著正相關,個別而言,說與寫的能力較不能 由托福成績顯示。 雖然研究生們托福的成績都很高,但對於說和寫仍感到困難。一般而言,臺灣的英語教學較 重視考試的準備,而忽略了以生活經驗為基礎,來培養實際的溝通與應用能力。為此,本文 針對研究生們反應的需求,提出了若干的建議,以為發展未來英語課程與教學設計的參考。 |
英文摘要 | The purpose of this study is to assess the general English language skills of newly arrived Taiwanese graduate students at the Pennsylvania State University (PSU), and to find out what their perceptions of difficulties of language skills are in order to achieve their academic specialization. Therefore, the self-designed questionnaire was distributed to 37 PSU students to explore if there is any statistically significant difference among Taiwanese graduate students' perceptions of the four language skills and whether the TOEFL score appropriately reflects Taiwanese graduates' language skills. The results show that there is significant difference among students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills (F=15.19, p<.0001). However, the results of the Scheffe test at significance level.05 show that there is no significant difference between speaking and listening, and between reading and writing skills. Moreover, the reading skill was reported to be less difficult than the other skills. In addition, the TOEFL score is highly correlated with the composite of the four language skills. It shows that the TOEFL score is related to students' language proficiency. However, the correlation between the TOEFL scores and speaking and writing skills respectively are not statistically significant. Even though their scores were quite high, thegraduate students still perceived language difficulties in speaking and writing. In general, most of the students in Taiwan were trained to be good test takers when they learned English. However, the tests and English teaching do not deal with the setting and operation of real-life situations. Students' communicative competence was not the focus. Therefore, they need to improve those skills to achieve their academic goals. Some suggestions for future curriculum development and instruction design are included in this research project. |
