英文摘要 | Suites of stratigraphic units which act together as relatively strong and weak horizons within the Western Foothills fold and thrust belt can be recognized in the Miaoli-Wenshui and Chiayi-Alishan areas. Through combining field observations, theoretical considerations and laboratory tests, it has been determined that the influence of the strength of individual units to the development of geological structures is less important than the relative strength of a package of suites that deformed coherently. This result is consistent with the concept of structural lithic unit which has been successfully applied to understand the structural style in different tectonic regimes. The difference in the structural style of the Western Foothills fold and thrust belt between the Miaoli-Wenshui and the Chiayi-Alishan areas are observed through published geological maps. More thrusts and thrust-related folds are seen in the Miaoli-Wenshui area but more buckling folds are observed in the Chiayi-Alishan area at the same scale. In comparison with the distributions of structural lithic units in these two areas, the difference in the structural style seemingly can be attributed to the variation in the distribution of structural lithic units within these two areas. Three structural lithic units which progress from older to younger and are temporarily named A, B, and C are identified in the Western Foothills on both the Miaoli-Wenshui and Chiayi-Alishan areas according to the published geological maps and field observation of mesoscopic structures. Structural lithic unit A is primarily composed of interbedded, well-cemented sandstones and shales. Small scaled chevron folds with wavelengths of tens of meters to hundreds of meters is the most conspicuous deformed feature in this unit. Unit B mainly consists of thick-bedded to massive well cemented sandstones with thin-to thick-bedded shale. Thrusts and thrust-related asymmetric folds are the dominant structures in unit B. Unit C mainly consists of thick-bedded to massive, poorly cemented sandstones, siltstones, conglomerates, and shales. Concentric folds with wavelengths over hundreds of meters is the major structure in unit C. In the Miaoli-Wenshui area, the Lower Miocene strata belongs to unit A, the Upper Miocene strata belongs to unit B, and the Plio-Pleistocene strata belongs to unit C. In the Chiayi-Alishan area, the exposed Middle Miocene Nankang Formation and the Lower part of the Upper Miocene Nanchuang Formation belong to unit A, the Upper part of the Nanchuang Formation and the Lower Mio-Pliocene Kueichulin Formation belong to unit B, and the Plio-Pleistocene strata belongs to unit C. Since there are more rocks of structural lithic unit B exposed in the Miaoli-Wenshui area, than in the Chiayi-Alishan area, more thrusts and thrust-related folds are observed. In contrast, more rocks of structural lithic unit A are exposed in the Chiayi-Alishan area and small scaled buckling folds become dominant deformed structures. |
