英文摘要 | The cloze procedure, as a measuring tool of overall reading proficiency, has been a controversial issue. One reason for the controversy, among others, may be the construct validity of cloze, i.e., the trait of the cloze blank items. This project is in an attempt to study the construct validity of the cloze procedure. It aims to find out what kind of cloze items are more valid and reliable to explain the cloze scores. Four passages were selected to test 150 EFL (English as a Foreign Language) college freshmen. The following way of classification of cloze items was compared: Function Words vs. Content Words. The multiple regression analysis statistical method and the TSP (Time Series Program) statistical software package were used in the study. The main findings were: In view of the fact that in all the four passages the coefficients for the content -word blanks are bigger than those for function-word ones, it is reasonable to infer that to complete content-word blanks readers either need greater context or depend more on global cues to figure out the answer. In other words, content-word cloze items are more sensitive for measuring student' overall reading proficiency than function-words ones are. |
