英文摘要 | Based on the influence of American Civil Rights Movement, curriculum experts suggest that multicultural education should be broadly conceptualized and permeated the experience of all students regardless of racial, gender, religious, ethnic, or cultural heritage. Education reforms have brought multiculturalism to the forefront and cleared the way for changes that encourage respect for and appreciation of differences. Students who come from different backgrounds will have equal opportunities for education. With the formation of the global village, international commerce, technology, and science are becoming more closely related. English, the "linguafranca", has become a necessary tool of communication. Therefore, English instruction is becoming more and more imprtant to Taiwan's future, Since English instruction in Taiwan traditionally has been teacher-centered and test-driven, students wwere not motivated to learn English. To remedy this situation, teaching strategies and methods should be improved, and students' learning styles, environment, and their needs should be given more attention in terms of effective instruction. This study shows how incroporation of multicultural education enhances traditional English instruction. Therefore, this curriculum design infused with multicultural education will bring the home and community experience of the students into the classroom augmenting teaching methodologies, materials, and content, and creating mutual support between the school and the community. Thus, this curriculum design will cultivate students critical thinking and a more global view. To deal with the diversity in Taiwan in the future, this multicultural curriculum design will foster social harmony and improve students' interest in learning English. |
