英文摘要 | Beginning in 1966, the Cultural Revolution made a significant impact on all Chinese people. In order to understand this historic movement from first-hand data, the author interviewed eleven Mainland Chinese students studying at Rutgers University in 1989. Using in-depth interview and document analysis as research methods, this study provides more direct, personal experiences and offers more profound insights than other sources. The guiding questions posed in this work are: (1) What kinds of lives did the youth lead during and after the Cultural Revolution? (2) How do they feel about the Cultural Revolution? (3) How do they perceive the ideology of Mao? (4) Did they change their beliefs and attitudes during those years? If so, how? This research found that these groups of young intellectuals have undergone the disillusionment with Mao's ideology. Two major characteristics drawn fi.om their life histories are the disturbed educational process and a shift attitude from political morality to pluralistic value systems. |
