| 英文摘要 | Beginning with a clarification of the precise meanings of chi chu "kickball", ts'u chu "football", t'a chu "hockey" and others sports, the author explains that only chi chu (also known as ta ch'iu, chi ch'iu and chu ch'iu) can be considered to be the game of polo introduced through Turfan and popularized in China during the early T'ang. Ts'u chu, t'a chu and other horse sports belong to a separate category. To distinguish the fundamental features of polo, the author has conducted requisite textual research on the polo tradition of the T'ang and Sung dynasties. Drawing from both historical documents and selected articles, the paper covers the historical background of the game, with an account of various aspects of the sport including sports equipment, the sports field, the origin of horses as well as the general details of the game. Not only the emperor, but nobles, government officials, young men and women all partook in the pleasure of his aristocratic and rigorous sport. At the same time, polo had an extremely negative influence on the political, economic and social climate of the imperial court of the T'ang and Sung. The An Lu-shan Rebellion in the T'ang dynasty and the rise and fall of Wang An-shih's New Policies in the Sung dynasty are perhaps not completely unrelated to the emperor's frequent diversions on the playing field. |
