英文摘要 | Middle Pleistocene pollen records of a low altitude (410 m) lake sequence in the Ilan district, northeastern Taiwan, show a fluctuation of warm and cold climates. Warm stages were dominated by Castanopsis while cool/cold stages were increased by Fagus and Pinaceae. Quercus and Alnus were common in both cool and warm conditions. The lake sequence is comprised of about 20 m thick homogeneous clay in the lower part, followed by an alternation of 4 m thick silt-clay and sandy mud, and capped by several meters of lateritic soil and conglomerate. Palynological study indicates that the sequence begins from a warm, humid period, fluctuating to a cool, then a warm cycle and finally to a prominant cool/cold, less humid period. The sequence belongs to Brunhes Subchron as witnessed by paleomagnetic study. A magnetic event which tentatively correlated with BIWA Ⅱ(295 Ka) by Lee and Horng (1992) is recognized in the upper part of the homogeneous clay. Pollen fossil recovered from samples above the magnetic event is remarkably increased in its percentage of Gramineae and spore. The beginning of the magnetic event almost corresponds to the lithological boundary between the homogeneous clay and the silt-clay alternation. Fossil recovered from the still upper sandy mud shows the same importance of herbs but with an increase in Pinus and Tsuga. This study reveals that (1)Fagus was an important element in the coll/cold stages of the site in northeastern Taiwan and (2) the high percentage of herbs in the upper part of the sequence indicates that cold and much less humid conditions than today existed in northeastern Taiwan during the middle Pleistocene. |
