(2);(2) a.We gaveJohn the book b.John was given the book.C.The book was given John.如Czepluch(1982/83)所提,我也認為(2a)有一個看不見的介詞在JOhn之前, 為了解釋 (2)句中的合語法性/不合語法性,我主張在英文中,介詞可併合於被動 動詞,卻不併合於主動動詞。 |
英文摘要 | This paper first comments on Li's observation on Stowell's NP incorporation analysis of double object sentences. By showing that (1b)is much degraded than (1a) and (Id) is much degraded than (1c), I propose that there is Preposition incorporation (PI) instead of NP incorporation in a double object sentence such as (la):(1)a. Wo song(gei)le Zhangsan yiben shu. I send ASP one CL book I sent Zhangsan a book b. Wo song ie gei Zhangsan yi ben shu. c. Zhangsan.wo song ie yiben shu. d. Zhangsan,wo song gei ie yiben shu. This is to say, the preposition geiand not the NP Zhangsan is incorporated intothe verb in (la). Adopting Hornstein/Weinberg's Oblique Trace Filter, which says anNP cannot be moved and leave a trace if it is assigned oblique Case, I correctlypredict that (1c), where gieis not present, is quite acceptable, (assuming that gei,as a preposition, assigns oblique Case), but (Id), where geiis present, is not. Based on the PI analysis ,I then discuss Case assignment and extraction possibilities in Chinese and English. For example, sentences like (2) are examined: (2) a. We gave John a book. b. John was given a book. c. The book was given John.In (2a) .following Czepluch (1982/1983) ,I suggest that there is a null prepositionpreceding the indirect object John To account for the grammaticality/ungrammat-icality of the sentences in (2), I propose that in English PI applies to passiveverbs but not active verbs. |
