| 英文摘要 | “Revival” (fu 復, learning from the past) and “innovation” (bian 變) are two pivotal notions in the history of Chinese literature, serving as key entry points for understanding Tang poetic theory. In his Remarks of Poetry 詩式, mid-Tang poet-monk Jiaoran 皎然 (730–799) proposed a theory of balancing revival and innovation, criticizing Chen Zi’ang 陳子昂 (659–700), Shen Quanqi 沈 佺期 (656–714), Song Zhiwen 宋之問 (656–712), and Dali 大曆 poets of Jiangnan as examples of imbalance. He argued that poetic composition should begin with the expression of the poets’ emotions rising from one’s qingxing (human nature), which he regarded as the means to achieve balance between revival and innovation. According to Jiaoran, uncontrived emotions already exist naturally within qingxing and can be discovered through introspection. The theoretical foundation of his view lies in the Hongzhou school 洪州宗 of Chan Buddhism, particularly its discourse on mind and nature (xinxing lun 心性論). By integrating this Buddhist insight, Jiaoran aimed to address the contemporary problem of overly pursuing the external form of poetry while neglecting the expression of personal emotions in poetic creation. He also first formally introduced Buddhist philosophy into the realm of classical Chinese poetic theories, playing a transformative role in the development of the mid-Tang poetics. |
